Do not be put off by the fact that this movie is in Black and White or that it was made 44 years ago (that’s right, it was made in 1965). It is still one of the most chilling and disturbing horror movies ever made. Considered by many to be one of the truly great movies of the 1960s, it manages to evoke an incredible atmosphere filled with dread and fear without resorting to obvious shock tactics.

This was the first movie made in English by director Roman Polanski, and it is considered by many critics to be his best film. He went on to make such other films as “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Chinatown”. Polanski's direction is unparalleled in this film as he elicits a creepy terror through the use of some fairly unconventional special-effects. The movie stars the gorgeous actress Catherine Deneuve (21 years old at the time) in what many believe to be her finest performance. In this film she suffers from an industrial-strength case of sexual repression coupled with a hefty dose of sibling rivalry which foists upon her a succession of rape fantasies and delusional hallucinations. Her unforgettable performance is what really sticks in your mind long after the movie is over. That and Polanski's accomplished and tense direction make this wicked tale of madness and paranoia well worth a watch.

Time Out called this “one of the most intelligent horror movies ever made."
